School Challenges: Expedition Phases

Longer overseas expeditions are usually made up of four phases, presenting a balanced experience of the region:

- Cultural Phase

- Community Project Phase

- Expedition Phase

- Chill-Out Phase

On shorter challenges, you may prefer to make one phase the main focus, such as the Expedition or Community Project phase, and devote only a day or two to other experiences.

We will suggest destinations and give ideas for the different phases of the Expedition, but for most School Challenges the students, together with their teachers and our support, ultimately decide and plan their own Challenge.

This is an important part of taking responsibility for the success of their own challenge, and encourages important development skills such as negotiation, communication and budgeting from the very start of the planning process.

EXPEDITION PHASE EXAMPLES

Cultural Phase

An introduction to the area and culture

Time to appreciate the history and heritage of the region, as well as providing a brief glimpse into its contemporary culture and way of life; serves as a great preparation for the rest of the Expedition

Community Project Phase

A rewarding hands-on project which benefits the local community or environment

Students will usually work alongside the local people, gaining valuable insights into different cultures and creating long-lasting bonds with a community

Expedition Phase

The physical challenge, such as trekking or cycling

Designed to be challenging but achievable for any member of the group provided they are well-prepared!

Ideally takes place in remote, untouristed areas and provides students with an opportunity to explore a region of the world which is firmly off the beaten track.

Students are encouraged to plan their route, cook meals and generally be as self-sufficient as possible.

The experience of exploring a true wilderness together, sometimes under tough conditions, will challenge and develop the team further, and provide an enormous sense of achievement and confidence by the end of the phase.

Chill-Out Phase

A chance to experience more of the country, culture or environment

Can be as laid-back or energetic as the group wishes;  experience diverse landscapes (eg beaches, rainforests, mountains) or focus on cities and cultural attractions, or incorporate more adrenaline-pumping activities into the mix. Students must ensure it all fits into the budget!
